The new regulation, which came into force a few days ago obliges the producers of poultry meat to have processing factory corresponding to set standards. Farmers say that they were surprised by the new standard, whichare endangering the small and medium enterpises.
In order to get the lisence the poutlry producers should follow the hygiene standars of slaughtering and further processing the meat , as well as, storage standards. Very few slaughterhouses in Georgia meet the relevant requirements and the owners of such are the major producers.
Food safety agency said that according to the new regulation, individuals, i.e peasants, have no obligation to follow the regulations for poultry slaughtering and processing.
The new regulation has been known to traders. They do not rule out the possibility that the new rules will lead to price increases.
