The Prosecutor"s Office has detained five former high ranking officials of the Gldani Establishment No. 8 and Rustavi prison No.6.

According to the prosecutor Koka Katsitadze, the investigation has established that in 2011-2012 the head of the Legal Regime Department of the Penitentiary Department N8 and the employees of the same department were physically assaulting prisoners.

It was established that the defendants were phisically and verbally abusing prisoners in the moment of their arrival to the prison and afterwards, in period of their detainment the violence against the same prisoners had a systematic character which aimed to result in their unwavering obedience.
According to the Prosecutor"s Office, up to 800 convicts have been questioned in various penitentiary institutions in regard to the investigation.
The Prosecutor"s Office of Georgia has launched criminal cases against 72 employees of the 72 penitentiary institutions, including eight directors of the penitentiary establishments and 7 deputy director.
