Speaking at the session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia drew attention to the Russian aggression and the murder of Archil Tatunashvili in Tskhinvali region. Irakli Kobakhidze spoke about the gross violations of human rights by Russia on the occupied territories of Georgia.
"Over the last 25 years, Georgia had to solve the problems of 280,000 internally displaced persons who have been driven out of part of Georgia"s territory - from Abkhazia and Tskhinvali by ethnic cleansing, among them are Georgians and citizens of other nationalities." The Georgian government controlled these territories in the early 90s Thiese terriories were occupied illegally by force by the Russian Federation. In 2008, in the result of the Russian military aggression the number of refugees increased and the human rights situation in the occupied territories has deteriorated. Russia has currently occupied 20% of our territories, established the puppet regimes in Abkhazia and South Ossetia which violate human rights. There are cases of kidnapping and torture. Mr. Tatunashvili has recently been tortured and killed in custody, "- said Irakli Kobakhidze.
Georgian delegation"s visit to Geneva started today. In parallel to the participation of the Assembly, the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia and the delegation members will hold high-level bilateral meetings.
