"Rustavi 2" in the US Human Rights Report

 

The US State Department human rights report on the situation in the world was presented by Jon Kerry to the media.

The report on the situation in Georgia includes Vano Merabishvili`s case, the so called Cables case and dismissal of ALasania, Bachana Akhalaia and Mikheil Saakashvili charges, as well as the subject of surveillance in "Rustavi 2" .

The report also mentiones the political prisoners. "Some opposition parties assessed the investigation launched agains former government officials as politically motivated. Approximately 45 mid- or high-level former government officials, including former president Saakashvili, the opposition United National Movement (UNM) general secretary, former minister of internal affairs, and prime minister Ivane Merabishvili, and former minister of internal affairs, defense, and corrections Bachana “Akhalaia, with crimes including obstruction of justice, misappropriation of government funds and money laundering, blackmail, privacy intrusion, and abuse of power. Of the 45 cases, 15 involved high-level officials; the government charged four of these 15 former government officials with torture or other physical abuse,"- says report.

One of the main problems cited by the State Department is the surveillance, which has been the key disputed issue year between the government and non-governmental organizations throughout the year. Video and audio recordings made in "Rustavi 2" broadcasting company were brought as an example here.

State department report  included homophobic statements made by some high ranking officials.

The report says that violence against women remains a major problem in Georgia. The report also indicates that mortality rate of prisoners has significantly reduced .
