January 14 is the National Flag Day in Georgia. In connection with the occasion, flag-raising ceremonies were held in various departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In 1999 the Parliament of Georgia passed a bill to restore the red-on-white cross design of the flag. The bill was not endorsed by the President, Eduard Shevardnadze.
However, it was adopted on January 14, 2004 by the United National Movement.
