The decision taken in Brussels yesterday contradicts the objectives of strengthening the EU. This is another missed opportunity, disrespect for Georgia. Such a statement made today Hungarian Foreign Minister at a joint press conference after meeting with his Georgian counterpart.
“A historic decision was made in Brussels yesterday. This historic decision states that the European Union granted candidate status to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Hungary has supported this decision. We wanted Georgia also to be granted candidate status. If there had been a small push, small reference to strategic vision, Georgia would have been given this status. This decision is incomprehensible, inexplicable, harmful from a European perspective.
This is not an attempt to calm you down, but Brussels uses the same double standards towards us. Now a question is what we can do in this situation?
We do and will do everything we can to further strengthen our collaboration. We will send an expert to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist you in European integration. We will continue to support you in the UN Human Rights Council as well.
We believe that Georgia deserves to be a candidate. We are saddened that you did not receive this status and we will try to correct this mistake as soon as possible”, - said Peter Siarto.
