Irakli Shotadze met with Erik Peterson, Principal Deputy Director at the US Department of Justice, Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training

Irakli Shotadze, the Prosecutor General of Georgia met with Erik Peterson, the Principal Deputy Director at the US Department of Justice, Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance & Training. Natia Merebashvili, Deputy Prosecutor General, Irakli Chilingarashvili, Head of the Department of International Relations and Legal Assurance, Lana Owens, Resident Legal Advisor to the United States Department of Justice and the representatives of the agency attended the meeting.

At the meeting, within the framework of bilateral cooperation, the parties talked about the implemented and ongoing reforms in the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia, the purpose of which, as noted at the meeting, is to strengthen the independence of the Prosecutor’s Office, to ensure effective operation and transparency.

As part of the meeting, the major contribution of the US in the process of development of the prosecution system was also emphasized.

According to the statement of Irakli Shotadze, many successful projects are being executed in the Prosecutor’s Office in close cooperation and support from the US, including - towards the raising the qualifications of employees, combatting transnational and cybercrime, supporting the jury trial, the office of the witness and victim coordinator and etc.

The Prosecutor General thanked Erik Peterson for the assistance provided by the US Department of Justice in the process of reforming the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.
