The Ukrainian candidate for the presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Alexandr Merezhko, was involved in the adoption of changes that were absolutely unacceptable to Georgian Dream, which is one of the reasons why the Georgian delegation will not support his candidacy. Such a statement made today the Chairman of the ruling party.
“We support the re-election of Tiny Kox. It is an accepted practice in the Council of Europe that once a president is elected with a specific political quota, he is reelected for a second term.
There is an alternative candidate, although we essentially support the continuation of the practice that has been established in the Assembly. An alternative candidate is Ukrainian representative Merezhko, who was involved in the adoption of those changes, which were absolutely unacceptable to us. This is one of the factors why we will not support his candidacy.
We are talking about the changes related to inclusion of [Mikheil] Saakashvili’s surname in the previous resolution, at the previous session, which was categorically unacceptable for us," said Kobakhidze.
