Tbilisi conference adopts Declaration for Rehabilitation of Inmates, Probationers

The international Conference on Innovations in the Rehabilitation and Resocialization Process of Inmates and Probationers, hosted in Tbilisi, adopted a 12-point declaration that will be used for rehabilitation of prisoners and probationers.

The Tbilisi Declaration will be developed based on the latest approaches to the rehabilitation-resocialization of inmates and probationers, to serve the participant states as the main guiding document.

Summarizing the work of the Conference, which brought together high-ranking officials and experts from up to 20 foreign states, as well as top representatives of international organizations, the Minister of Justice said the event could lay the foundation for “many instances of interesting and successful cooperation”.

The high-level conference dedicated to Innovations in the Rehabilitation and Resocialization of Convicts and Probationers was co-organized by the European Organization of Prison and Correctional Services-an organization established jointly by the EU together with the Justice Ministry and the Special Penitentiary Service-and the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs.

The event was designed to share the best experience and practices concerning innovations in penitentiary and probation systems, also to promote educational, sports management, and rehabilitation-resocialization programs.

Within the scope of the conference, a thematic exhibition was held to enable the participants to familiarize themselves with the innovations introduced in the penitentiary system. The event was attended by representatives of the executive and legislative branches, and of the diplomatic corps.
