The Georgian Dream named Mikheil Kavelashvili, a Georgian politician and former professional footballer, as its presidential candidate. Final consultations on the presidential candidacy were held at the party’s office.
Mikheil Kavelashvili is a member of Georgia’s 11th convocation parliament. From 2016 to 2020, he was a member of the 9th convocation parliament from the Georgian Dream, he also has been a member of Georgia’s 10th convocation parliament from 2020. In 2022, Mikheil Kavelashvili, along with Sozar Subari and Dimitri Khundadze, left the Georgian Dream and joined the People’s Power party. From March 20, 2024, he has been the political secretary of the People’s Power party.
Mikheil Kavelashvili is a former striker of the Georgian national team. Between 1988 and 1995, he was a football player for Dinamo Tbilisi and became the Georgian champion thrice. Over the years, he played for football clubs such as Manchester City, Grasshopper, Zurich, and Lucerne.
The presidential elections will be held on December 14 according to the American model, the inauguration will be held on December 29. For the first time in the history of Georgia, the President will be elected indirectly according to the American model.
The Central Election Commission will form an electoral college, which consists of 300 members - 150 members of the Parliament, 20 members from the Supreme Council of Abkhazia, 21 members from the Supreme Council of Adjara, and 109 members representing local self-government bodies, based on the proportion of support received by the parties in the 2021-2022 period.
