The European Winter Youth Olympic Festival is underway in Bakuriani. As a result of the first day of competition, Jesper Schmitz of the Netherlands and Lisa Victoria Ngo Mouaha of France claimed gold medals in the short track speed skating 1,500 metre events in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.

The Festival features up to 1,000 athletes from 45 countries competing in eight winter sports, with events also held in Tbilisi and Batumi.

The competition is set to close on Sunday, February 16.
