The renewal of rolling stock at “Georgian Railway” [GR] continues. According to Lasha Abashidze, the General Director of GR, significant optimization has been carried out within the system, which allowed for the launch of new projects. Already, 200 new freight wagons have been purchased, and about 60 of them have already entered Georgia.
As he noted, it is planned to add 10 new passenger trains to Georgian Railway in the near future. Furthermore, capital repairs and modernization of 5 passenger trains are already underway.
“We made this purchase directly from the manufacturer, without the involvement of any, so to speak, intermediary companies. In general, I believe it is correct that GR should implement such important projects and purchase directly from the manufacturing plants.
Regarding passenger trains, we have planned to add 10 new passenger trains to GR in the near future, and capital repairs and modernization of 5 passenger trains are already underway. In total, this will enable us to fully operate our passenger routes with completely new, modern trains”, - said Lasha Abashidze.
Moreover, according to Tamar Ioseliani, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, for the first time in the history of the country’s independence, GR will purchase up to 50 new locomotives. As she added, corresponding tender for the procurement has already been announced.
“For the first time in the history of Georgia’s independence, GR will purchase up to 50 new locomotives and, accordingly, renew its wagon fleet.
We already see the results in this direction - the corresponding tender for the procurement of locomotives has been announced, and 200 new wagons have been purchased, which were contracted directly with the manufacturer. Consequently, significant resources were saved in this direction, which, of course, will also be utilized for the development of 'Georgian Railway”, - said Tamar Ioseliani.
