Brussels terror attack victims paid tribute with a minute of silence

Hundreds of people have gathered in Brussels for a minute"s silence to remember the 34 people who died and the 230 injured in yesterday"s tragic attacks.

People across Brussels gathered for the minute"s silence in the city"s Place de la Bourse at midday local time.

The EU Commission also held a minute"s silence in their Brussels headquarters.

Crowds also gathered in Schumann Square to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.

Joining other world leaders in expressing their horror in the aftermath of the attacks, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh said they were "deeply shocked and saddened".

A statement from the royal palace said that Belgium"s King Philippe and Prime Minister Charles Michel observed the minute"s silence in the European quarter of the city, where the European Union"s institutions are located, near the site of the attack at the Maalbeek metro station.

Flags are currently flying at half-mast on Whitehall government buildings, and the Belgian flag is flying at half-mast over Downing Street.

Last night world landmarks were lit up in Belgian colours as millions paid tribute to those slaughtered by ISIS terrorists during the Brussels terror attacks.

The Belgian capital was left devastated after ISIS jihadis bombed Zaventem Airport and the Maelbeek metro station near the European Union (EU) headquarters.

Royals from across the continent have joined in an outpouring of grief from around the world towards the country.
