Panama documents first result - Iceland"s Prime Minister Resigns

Iceland’s prime minister resigned suddenly Tuesday, less than two days after accusations arose that he hid millions of dollars in offshore accounts.

Multiple news agencies confirmed that Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson said he would step down amid the so-called “Panama Papers” scandal, in which documents indicated he and his wife owned an offshore company, Wintris, and that they had concealed family assets.

The documents, leaked from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, emerged as a part of an investigation led by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and were released through multiple news outlets over the weekend. They included evidence of questionable – though not necessarily illegal – financial practices involving 12 current and former world leaders, including Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Saudi King Salman, as well as 60 officials connected to world leaders, such as operatives within Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

Gunnlaugsson’s resignation came a day after the threat of a no-confidence vote from the Icelandic parliament, as well as nationwide protests over government mismanagement that existed previously but were bolstered by the Panama Papers reporting.Gunnlaugsson had previously called for the dissolution of the parliament, but President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson refused.

Gunnlaugsson plans to remain in his parliamentary seat and will continue to serve as chairman of his Progressive Party.
