Constitutional amendments - constitutionalists and NGOs urge President to use veto

Experts of the field call on the President of Georgia to veto the constitutional amendments. Constitutionalists and NGOs say that the adoption of the main law of the country is damaging the state interests.

"The president must use veto and the preparations for that were already in place, because the president met the opposition and prepared some projects. The Georgian Dream has a constitutional majority, and hence it has the opportunity to refuse to share this opinion that I think is damaging to state interests, because the Venice Commission had several important remarks that should be taken into consideration. First of all, this is the ytransition to the proportional electoral system, perhaps the Achilles heel of our project, "-says Constitutionalist Vakho Zhvania.

The main problem for the non-governmental sector is the preservation of the majoritarian electoral system and the change of rule of election of the president.

Despite the refusal of the president, MPs will gather at the extraordinary session today and they will vote for the draft constitution in the third reading. The session is scheduled for 14:00 in Kutaisi.
