Laura Thornton, director of the US National Democratic Institute (NDI) office of Georgia, responds to developments in front of Tbilisi City Hall. Laura Thornton says that people should have the opportunity to express their opinions.
She hopes that excessive violence will not take place in Tbilisi streets.
"We need to carefully monitor what strains the political environment . I do not want to see acts of violence. It is important that people could freely express their opinions. They have the right to express their views on different legislation. I hope their right to this will be protected, "- said Laura Thornton.
Let us remind you that the situation has been tense at Tbilisi City Hall several times. Leaders of the rally tried to enter the Tbilisi City Hall`s premises, but the patrol police did not allow them to entere. During the rally, the MIA reported that six people were detained.
Leaders of the "UNM" held a demonstration near the City Hall. Representatives of opposition forces were demanding meeting with Mayor of Tbilisi. Their main demand was that Davit Narmania did not sign the document sent by City Council.
Tbilisi City Council discussed the document and transferred two plots of land to Ivanishvili`s company for a symbolic price of 1 Lari.
