"Vano Merabishvili should have been released long ago" - European Parliament Member responds to decision of European Court

European Parliamentarians respond to the decision of the Strasbourg Court on Vano Merabishvili`s case. Members of the European Parliament say that there were questions from the very beginning regarding this case. The European Parliamentarians also say that the country should avoid the cases in which there is doubt regardng selective justice.

" Selective justice should be avoided . This is one of the areas where we see the problem. In recent years Georgia has made great progress, but there are still some problems in connection with this issue. The EPP president"s statement is part of this, "- Elmar Brok said.

The European Parliament member, Jaromir Stetina, believes that Vano Merabishvili should have been released long ago.

"Vano Merabishvili should have been released long ago, because treating former political figures as offenders should not be happening in the democratic countries, but in Georgia, the former minister and the president were treated like that. Even though I am not a judge but I know that the arrests of former high ranking officials is a practice in non-democratic countries , "- stated Jaromir Stetina.a member of the European Parliament.

The European Court of Human Rights has declared a decision on the case of Vano Merabishvili. The Judicial Chamber left the 2016 Decision in force accordng to which the Georgian Government violated Article 18 of the Human Rights Convention against Merabishvili.

Strasbourg Court rarely establishes a violation of Article 18. The same was applied to the cases of Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuri Lucensco.
