Ombudsman criticizes the government and the prosecutor"s office

According to the Ombudsman"s Human Rights report of last year, legitimate questions remain with regard to impartiality of the Prosecutor"s Office.

According to Ombudsman Ucha Nanuashvili, questions still remain concerning several cases.

"Legitimate questions remain with regard to impartiality of the Prosecutor"s Office. There was no need to classify the so-called cables case, which impeded the defense in accessing case materials at the early stage of the investigation. Later, the Prosecutor"s Office took the Public Defender"s recommendations into view and a significant part of the case materials was declassified.

The results of the investigation with regard to the Lapankuri developments are still unavailable to the victims’ families, interested parties and the public,"- said the Ombudsman.

According to him, the investigative authorities must work in an effective and timely manner on the Erosi Kitsmarishvili and Beso Khardziani cases. Nanuashvili emphasized that the investigation must provide persuasive answers to all questions as soon as possible.

Among uninvestigated cases the Ombudsman also named: the alleged illegal detention of Tbilisi City Hall and City Assembly employees in 2013-2014, illegal removal of Ivane Merabishvili from prison and the assault on MP Nugzar Tsiklauri.
