The opening of the so-called Embassy of occupied Abkhazia in Syria is the continuation of an illegal decision made by the Assad regime in 2018 under the pressure of Russia. Such a statement released today the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.
“Opening so-called embassy of occupied Abkhazia region in Syria represents a continuation of the totally illegal decision, which the Assad regime took in 2018 as a result of pressure by Russia, and yet another blatant violation of the fundamental norms and principles of international law.
Following this illegal decision, Georgia broke off the diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic. It is noteworthy that the entire international community, the leading European countries, the US and international organizations strongly condemned the Assad Regime’s illegal decision on establishment of so-called diplomatic ties with the Russian occupation regimes in Sokhumi and Tskhinvali.
This illegitimate decision has been clearly rejected by the Syrian opposition forces that have issued several condemning statements and expressed unequivocal support to Georgia’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. We are confident that one day, after the end of the current illegitimate regime in Syria, when the country embarks on the course of democratic development, this illegal decision will be revised and Syria will return to the framework of international law, which is based on the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity”, - reads the statement.
