I always say that it’s better to negotiate strategic issues instead of refusing to do it, the member of European Parliament Andrius Kubilius wrote on Facebook.
“Our beloved Sakartwell (Georgia) is back on a political crossroads.
Parliament elections have not long ended. International community observers named that the elections were competitive, but there were also many flaws. The opposition named these flaws as big and demanded new elections to be held. The ruling Georgian Dream Party led by the rich Bidzina Ivanishvili refused to meet such a requirement of the opposition. Opposition, which will own 60 seats out of 150 in the new Parliament, has improved that they will boycott the new Parliament. The EU and the US ambassadors started encouraging dialogue between the ruling party and the opposition parties to avoid a deep political crisis.
During this week, I personally have had a lot of conversations with representatives of Sakartvelo political parties - both ruling parties and opposition. I always say strategic issues are better to agree than not to talk. Unfortunately, as far as I know the final agreement in Tbilisi has not been reached yet. Although a lot of progress has been made, especially on how election laws should be changed, but new elections are still not agreed.
I made a special statement yesterday. In my belief, another important strategic argument on why the Sakartvelo parties should agree on effective parliamentary work should not be forgotten: this is a special time on the way of Sakartvelo’s Euro-Atlantic integration. International media announces that NATO’s headquarters is being considered to provide NATO Membership Action Plan to Sakartvelo state soon. In their turn, the ruling party of Sakartvelo announced that they are ready to submit an official application to the European Commission for membership in the European Union in 2024 This is a great and important ambition that requires to be agreed upon by parties.
The integration agenda of NATO and the European Union is becoming increasingly intense. This is the period of historical possibilities for the State of Sakartvelo. Georgian Parliament needs effective use of these opportunities. This is responsible for both the ruling party and the opposition”, - reads the statement of Andrius Kubilius.
