The reduction of the election threshold to 0-3% will be considered if the number of MPs needed to implement the constitutional amendment enters the Parliament - Papuashvili

Shalva Papuashvili, from Georgian Dream Faction, and Levan Ioseliani, from Citizens’ Party, held a joint briefing regarding the set-up of a working group on election reform.

“Since the Georgian Dream came to power, all elections in Georgia have been recognized by internationally recognized organizations as credible, transparent and competitive. Nevertheless, the Georgian Dream did its best to refine the electoral system as much as possible and eliminate even the small shortcomings that accompanied the electoral process in previous years. We, as the ruling party, are well aware of the responsibility that the society has entrusted us during the 2020 Parliamentary Elections.

Therefore, in order to raise the political culture of our country to a higher level, maximize the electoral system, eliminate any skepticism and unsubstantiated interpretations regarding all subsequent elections, a working group will be set up in the legislature to prepare large-scale electoral reform”, - said Papuashvili.

As he noted, the reduction of the election threshold to 0-3% will be considered if the number of deputies (113 deputies) needed to implement the constitutional amendment enters the Parliament.

The group is chaired by Shalva Papuashvili and Levan Ioseliani. The Working Group, along with parliamentary parties, will include NGOs and international partners. Relevant bills will be submitted to the Parliament no later than March 1, 2021, and the adoption should take place before May 1, 2021.

Papuashvili once again called on those parties that refuse to participate in the parliamentary work.
