Tragedy, caused by arbitrary impediments to the freedom of movement - Marina Kaljurand

Marina Kaljurand MEP

MEP Marina Kaljurand expresses her sincere condolences over the death of four residents of Gali district:

“I have been deeply saddened by the deaths of four Gali district residents, who drowned while trying to cross the Enguri river between the Tbilisi-controlled territory and the occupied region of Abkhazia. I wish to extend my sincere condolences to their families and friends.

This latest tragedy, caused by arbitrary impediments to the freedom of movement, illustrates the suffering endured by local communities who used to live in peace and harmony, as well as the deterioration of the human rights situation in the occupied regions.

The European Parliament has repeatedly expressed its unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally-recognised borders and called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict by negotiations and diplomacy. The Russian Federation must honour its international obligations and reverse its recognition of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region / South Ossetia. As the power exercising effective control, it must grant unconditional access to the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM) to the occupied regions, in accordance with the EU-brokered Six-Point Agreement that ended the war”, - reads the statement of the MEP.
