Opposition MPs from Lelo, Strategy Agmashenebli, Khatuna Samnidze from Republican Party, independent MP David Bakradze and MP Zurab Japaridze from Girchi-More Freedom have demanded the postponement of elections for four new members of Georgia’s High Council of Justice.
The opposition MPs say that both judge and non-judge members of the Council must be elected only after large-scale justice reforms are carried out, in line with the EU-mediated agreement.
“4 judges should be elected in line with the new rules, developed as part of the reform. Reform must also precede the election of non-judicial members of the Council.
For our part, we undertake that the Parliament should prioritize the issue related to the reform of the Council of Justice and initiate and adopt appropriate changes within a reasonable time so that the work of the institutions is not hindered.
Other issues of justice under the agreement should be reformed in stages, no later than the spring session of 2022, as specified in the agreement”, - reads the joint letter of MPs.
The election for the new members to the body which selects and appoints judges in Georgia is scheduled on May 26, by the conference of judges.
