“The State Inspector’s Office is investigating the fact of possible inhuman treatment of Mikheil Saakashvili.

We are conducting intensive investigative and procedural actions: questioning witnesses, requesting documents and videos, visiting places of interest for the investigation, scheduling examinations, etc.

In parallel, it is essential to protect the health, life, honor, dignity and safety of the participant in the process.

The State Inspector’s Office wrote a letter to the Ministry of Justice of Georgia requesting that Mikheil Saakashvili be placed in conditions where his health, honor, dignity and safety would be protected.

The latest report submitted to the Parliament says that the State Inspector’s Service has no effective legislative leverage to protect accused/convicted persons and that there is a need for legislative changes in this regard. In practice, the State Inspector’s Service has applied to a penitentiary institution for a transfer of a prisoner/convict to another institution, and this request has been considered, although consideration of this request depends on the desire of the penitentiary institution. In view of the above, it is necessary to establish an effective system of witness protection for possible crimes committed by officials”, - reads the statement of the agency.
