Parliamentary opposition demands suspension of expedited consideration of draft law on State Inspector

Parliamentary opposition demands suspension of expedited consideration of draft law on State Inspector.

“The Law of Georgia on the State Inspector Service has been in force since November 1, 2019, and the country has a State Inspector, who is elected by the Parliament for a term of 6 years.

Today, instead of taking a step forward to further strengthen the service, as an effective investigation of crimes committed by police is a significant challenge for Georgia, we see an attempt to abolish the Inspector’s Service, which has the signs of political retaliation against an independent state agency.

This is confirmed by the fact that not only civil society representatives and other stakeholders were not involved in the preparation of the draft law, but this initiative was a surprise for the State Inspector herself and for the Service as a whole.

The bill initiated by the majority MPs, which aims to abolish the service of the State Inspector, is a dangerous precedent and invalidates the immunity granted to the head of an independent institution for a specific term.

We demand that the parliamentary majority suspend the consideration of the legislative initiative in an expedited manner, so that the Parliament can ensure a comprehensive, impartial study of the issue and the discussion with the involvement of all interested parties. Otherwise, it will be another precedent of an attack against an independent state institution and another setback on the path to democratization”, - reads the joint statement of the opposition MPs.
