Parliamentary opposition proposes to celebrate May 8 instead of May 9

The parliamentary opposition is proposing to celebrate May 8 instead of May 9 as the day of victory over fascism.

MPs Teona Akubardia, Armaz Akhvlediani, Khatuna Samnidze, Giorgi Vashadze, Tariel Nakaidze and Paata Manjgaladze drafted amendments to the Labor Code, which provides for the announcement of May 8 as a holiday.

“Russia and post-Soviet countries, including Georgia, celebrate the Victory Day on May 9. Even after the collapse of the USSR, the only exceptions are the Baltic states and Ukraine, where like UK, USA and Europe, this date is celebrated on May 8”, - reads the explanation note of the amendments.
