The statement by the European People’s Party on Georgia shows the agenda of the United National Movement opposition party and a part of the opposition “absolutely diverges” from the interests of the country. Such a statement made today the Chairman of Parliament.
“We saw the statement by the EPP’s, stating that this was a text prepared by the UNM. This text once again showed what we have been talking about - that a part of the opposition has been involved in the campaign to prevent Georgia from receiving the EU membership candidate status. Just a few days left for the European Commission and then the Council of the European Union to take a decision on Georgia’s membership bid, the “main issue” for UNM was “still” the imprisoned Mikheil Saakashvili”, - said Shalva Papuashvili.
He believes “the idea of justice, the murdered [Sandro] Girgvliani, the Strasbourg court decision, the rule of law were directly disdained from the EPP high tribune.”
Former European Council President Donald Tusk has officially stepped down as EPP president and will be replaced by Manfred Weber, the head of the party’s European Parliament group. Tusk read Mikheil Saakashvili’s letter while an empty chair under Saakashvili’s name was displayed in the hall.
