The Defense and Security, the Human Rights and Civil Integration, and the Legal Issues Committees held a meeting in camera to discuss the Report by the State Security Service on activity for 2021, introduced by the First Deputy Chief of the SSS, Aleksi Batiashvili.
As the reporter stated, against this background and providing the increased threats, the Security Service held uninterrupted control of the situation on the occupied territories. As noted, the counter-intelligence troops revealed the interests and aspirations of the special services of the foreign countries, their modus operandi, and held the respective measures to neutralize and prevent threats.
Speaking about the hybrid threats, the reporter noted that the disinformation campaigns held by various countries against Georgia as posing a security threat for the country with the main target on our foreign political course and EU integration. The Security Service held an active counter-terrorism activity in 2021, including the identification of the terrorism-related challenges, international cooperation for sharing information, preventive measures for mitigation of threats, and enhancement of the response capacity against the challenges.
The counter-terrorist activity of Georgia was positively assessed by the US Department of State in its Annual Report. “The Annual Report by the Institute for Economics and Peace on Global Terrorism Index, Georgia along with a couple of other countries was assessed as a safe country according to the criterion on the impact of the terrorism. It implies that the terroristic incidents have not been registered in Georgia and at that, compared to 2020, the country has further improved the security situation”, - the reporter stated.
As a result of the activities of the SSS, no radical/extremist formations and terroristic attacks have taken place in Georgia.
Speaking about the activity of the Anti-Corruption Agency, the reporter noted that the Agency has initiated the investigation on 53 criminal cases, namely, on bribery, abuse of official powers, legalization of illegal income, fraud etc. and imposed the criminal responsibility on 162 persons. The SSS strived to prevent the possible engagement of the public workers in the corruptive and official crimes through the improvement of the professional and institutional capacity of the Corruption Prevention Department at the Agency.
