UNESCO supports Ukraine bid to put Odesa on World Heritage list

UNESCO supports Ukraine’s application for the inclusion of Odessa in the World Heritage List. Press service of the organization informed about this following the meeting of the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay in Paris.

During the visit, the head of the Ministry of Culture said that Ukraine will apply for the inclusion of Odessa in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is noted that the city is only a few tens of kilometers from the front line and has already been shelled. In particular, on July 24, part of the large glass roof and windows of the Odessa Museum of Fine Arts, opened in 1899, were destroyed.

“At the request of Ukraine, UNESCO has already mobilized international experts to provide technical support to the country so that the nomination can be immediately considered by the Member States sitting on the World Heritage Committee”, - the release says.

In addition, the Committee will be encouraged to inscribe the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kyiv and Lviv on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
