Parliament launches discussions on Draft Laws on Foreign Agents amidst protests and confrontation

A joint session of the Parliamentary Committees on Defense and Security and Foreign Relations discussed two draft laws on “foreign agents”. The discussion of the draft laws took place amidst protests. There was commotion in the corridor of the Parliament as well.

The draft laws were presented by the majority members from People"s Power: - Sozar Subari, Dimitri Khundadze, Mikheil Kavelashvili, Guram Macharashvili, Dachi Beraia, Viktor Japaridze, Eka Sepashvili, Davit Kacharava and Zaal Mikeladze.

The representatives of the media, non-governmental organizations and opposition, who expressed their protest in the legislative body, said that the draft laws were similar to the Russian law and that they significantly hinder Georgia"s progress towards European integration.

Before the start of the session, the situation became tense several times. There was a verbal and physical confrontation between the deputies, after which the security service of the Parliament forcibly removed opposition MPs David Kirkitadze, David Khajishvili, Nikoloz Machutadze, Levan Khabeishvili, Giorgi Botkoveli and Paata Manjgaladze.
