I call on the Georgian authorities to request an opinion from the Venice Commission and follow its recommendations - Secretary General of the Council of Europe

Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, on Wednesday, said she was following “with concern” recent developments in Georgia regarding the draft law “On transparency of foreign influence”.

“I am following with concern recent developments in our member State, Georgia, regarding the draft law “On transparency of foreign influence” adopted in the first reading by Georgian Parliament on 7 March. It is essential that any such legislation be in line with the Council of Europe standards on human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

To this end, should the examination of this legislation be pursued, I call on the Georgian authorities to request an opinion from the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission and follow its recommendations. A dynamic and vibrant civil society is key for the good functioning of any democracy. I urge the Georgian authorities to ensure a meaningful and peaceful political dialogue, with the participation of civil society”, - reads the statement.
