The Parliament did not support the candidates presented by the President for election to the board of the National Bank of Georgia [NBG].
Neither Giorgi Bakradze nor Dimitri Japaridze received support.
Only 5 deputies were in favor of Bakradze"s candidacy (3 - against). Also, five MPs supported Dimitri Japaridze.
It should be mentioned that the decision comes amidst the feud between the ruling party and the President over the NBG appointments. Recently, the ruling party overrode Salome Zourabichvili’s veto to introduce a new executive position – the post of first vice-president – in the Board of Directors of the NBG. President and experts fear, that the Georgian Dream is undermining the NBG’s independence.
On Monday, June 26, the Financial, Budgetary, and Sector Economy Policy Committees also declined Giorgi Bakradze and Dimitri Japaridze’s candidacies.
