In the last 1 year since these recommendations were defined, polarization has not decreased, but on the contrary, it has increased - Garibashvili

In the last one year since these recommendations were defined, polarization has not decreased, but on the contrary, it has increased. Such a statement made today the Prime Minister of Georgia after the meeting with Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission.

“It can be said that another recommendation remains impossible to fulfil, which is depolarization. This is a very difficult and complex issue. In general, we understand well that differences are characteristic of any democracy, we respect it very much.

We have a multi-party parliament, 9 parties entered the parliament in 2020. We have free media, very strong opposition channels. Of course, we are doing everything to reduce polarization. Of course, it does not depend only on our will and desire to resolve this issue.

Unfortunately, from what we have observed, in the last one year since these recommendations were defined, polarization has not decreased, but on the contrary, it has increased.

The radical forces operating in Georgia, I mean the representatives of previous government, the most anti-European forces, are trying to sabotage this process, the Prime Minister of Georgia. The candidate status is a subject of speculation for them. This is used by radical forces to destabilize the country and prevent it from receiving candidate status.

The government of Georgia, the ruling party was absolutely ready, is and will be ready in the future to cooperate with all the opposition forces, to implement the common national idea, to bring Georgia closer to the European Union, and for the country to receive candidate status. It is also a priority for us to maintain peace, stability, and provide well-being for the people”, - said Irakli Garibashvili.
