Josep Borrell, the European Union High Representative, highlighted Tbilisi’s “good work” in combating Russia’s circumvention of international sanctions imposed on it for its invasion of Ukraine last year. In a press briefing with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili in Tbilisi, he stressed the efforts by the Georgian Government for the purpose should be emphasized”.
“We support Ukraine, we will continue this process as long as it is necessary, and we will clearly condemn the aggressor. We will help Georgia to support the country in this process. It is important to ensure that our closest partners work in coordination at the international level to isolate Russia.
We welcome the close cooperation aimed at countering sanctions evasion in the country. It is important to clearly say and acknowledge this fact. I must also say that we are very sorry that the flights between Georgia and Russia have been restored.
The following message is related to the foreign policy of Georgia. Within the framework of the Association Agreement, Georgia undertook certain obligations and wants to become a member of the European Union.
At this point, there are definitely many areas that need to be improved. We need to combat Russia’s hybrid activities, war propaganda and other initiatives. It is precisely for this reason that the emphasis in the EU is on strengthening independent civil society, strengthening independence in Georgia, and fighting disinformation.
The most important thing is to ensure that there is a live, democratic system in the country and information is free. Providing information is very important.
My third message concerns unwavering support for the territorial integrity of Georgia. Today, our relationship with Georgia is strongest in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We will continue to stand with Georgia. These are not just words. We prove it with concrete actions, investments”, - said Josep Borrell.
