It is important that 27 member states unanimously agreed that Georgia deserves to become a member of the EU in the future, said the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia.
“We are waiting for the first enlargement report on Georgia. It will be a merit-based report submitted by the European Commission. The 35-chapter report will explain where progress has been made and where Georgia needs to make more progress on its way to the EU. The report also includes recommendations for moving forward.
This report will be the basis for the discussion of the 27 member states of the European Union, which will take place at the end of the year, in December, at the highest political level, at the level of presidents and prime ministers, who will unanimously decide if and what steps will be necessary to take when it comes to Georgia’s pursuit of joining the European Union.
I have been here for more than a year. I listen very carefully to what different politicians say. Some politicians claim that Georgia has practically fulfilled everything, some say that Georgia has practically not fulfilled any of the recommendations. If you want my opinion, I think the picture is mixed. On the one hand, a lot has been done, especially in recent weeks, after the visit of the EU High Representative, we see a huge acceleration, on the other hand, there are still different signals coming from Georgia. The impeachment procedure of the President of Georgia is underway, which does not really help to fulfill the number one priority, there are questions about the independence of the National Bank, which does not contribute to the fulfillment of the number two priority. Non-governmental organizations and civil society are also under pressure. So, the decision must be made by the leaders of the 27 member states. We sincerely hope that we will celebrate in December, and the message that the Prime Minister received yesterday from the European leaders in Spain is sincere and we will all celebrate in December”, - said Pawel Herczynski.
