Georgia appreciates Hungary’s support on EU path – Ilia Darchiashvili

Georgia appreciates the support and contribution of its Hungarian friends on the nation’s EU path. Such a statement the Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili made after the meeting with Hungarian colleague Peter Szijjarto in Budapest.

“At the meeting, we expressed our readiness to continue close dialogue and strengthen relations in all directions. Georgia’s EU accession and Hungary’s future presidency of the EU Council were the main discussion topics.

The European Council’s decision to grant Georgia candidate status created an unprecedented impetus on the country’s EU path. Our next goal is to achieve the opening of accession negotiations. We are mobilized and ready to implement the necessary reforms”, - said Darchiashvili.

“During the presidency of the EU Council, Hungary will make efforts to start membership negotiations with Georgia. One of the goals of the minister"s visit is to prepare for the 6 months when Hungary will become the chairman of the EU Council. At a time when the European Union is not at its best, it is our job to make it stronger, and one of the best tools for this is the enlargement of the EU.

Georgia’s accession to the European Union will be of great benefit to both parties. Hungary was one of the leading supporters of granting candidate status to Georgia. At the same time, Georgia deserved this status.

It is clear that the European continent alone cannot provide its own energy supply and requires external resources. The Caucasus region offers Europe ecologically clean, renewable energy. A quadrilateral agreement between Georgia, Azerbaijan, Hungary and Romania will come into effect on Monday. This agreement provides for the import of renewable energy, especially wind energy, from Georgia and Azerbaijan, via Romania and Bulgaria to Europe. This is a historic joint investment”, - added Peter Sijarto.
