A Sweden-based the Varieties of Democracy Institute [V-Dem] published the 2023 Freedom from Torture Index, which had ranked Georgia among the top 50 countries in the world.
The study covers 179 countries and territories around the world.
It focuses on the assessment of torture used by government officials or other agents of the state [police, security forces, prison guards and paramilitary groups].
In the 2023 ranking, Georgia ranked 46th among the top 50 countries.
Georgia ranked ahead of the US, Great Britain, Italy, Australia, Greece, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia and was the leader among the neighbouring countries.
According to the V-Dem, Georgia had begun to rapidly advance in the rankings after 2012.
Since this period, Georgia has ranked 2nd in the world in terms of score improvement in the rating scale. Besides, over 11 years, Georgia’s rating has improved by 101 positions. In 2023 a historic maximum in the model rating was recorded.
In 2012, Georgia ranked 147th and ranked behind Russia, Belarus, Afghanistan, Libya, Central African Republic, South Sudan, etc.
