Draft Election Code on the annulment of gender quotas adopted for the I reading

The Parliament discussed for the I reading and adopted the Draft Election Code with 82 votes against 15 submitted for expedited consideration.

The amendments regulate the gender quotas and submission of party lists, namely, the political parties shall no longer mandatorily compose their electoral lists according to the gender quota requirements.

Besides, the Draft reduces the bare minimum of the number of candidates for MPs from 60 to 30.

“Annulment of quotas provides equal conditions – men and women shall enjoy equal rights, which is fair and will be beneficial for the policy”, - the reporter, a member of the Political Group “Girchi”, Alexander Rakviashvili noted.

The respective amendment is being introduced to the Organic Law on Political Unions of Citizens, annulling the financial encouragement instrument that offers financial encouragement to the parties for enrolling women in their lists in respective proportions.

The Draft is initiated by the members of the Political Group “Girchi” Iago Khvichia, Alexander Rakviashvili, Vakhtang Megrelishvili and Hermann Szabo.
