The statements made in recent days regarding the cancellation of the visa regime, which our opponents are circulating so well, clearly revealed their real goals in relation to their homeland and their citizens. Such a statement made today the Chairperson of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee.
“The visa-free regime with the European Union is an achievement that our country has achieved as a result of many important reforms and as a result of very close cooperation with the EU and EU member states.
This is the result achieved on the basis of our activities, which our citizens enjoy. As for the cancellation - just as giving a visa-free regime is a political decision for any state, cancellation is also a political decision and it is impossible to do it without the consent of the member states…
The suspension mechanism that was developed by the European Commission and is today agreed by the EU member states, serves one purpose - to respond as much as possible to the concerns of the member states when it comes to the increase of illegal migration and to deal with the threats from migration in general for EU member states. There is no basis for the implementation of the suspension mechanism in relation to Georgia, which is written in the relevant document of the EU, and there is no basis for panic. It is a very well-documented process, if any EU member state is in such a danger that it is threatened by migration flows or non-compliance with the readmission agreement, they have the right to apply to the European Commission and the European Commission can initiate such a procedure, however, the basis for this is very well-documented and there are no grounds in relation to Georgia.
Also, we cooperate very closely with the European Commission and the EU member states in the direction that such a threat is not faced by Georgia”, - said Maka Botchorishvili.
