Parliament approves Amnesty Bill with the 1st reading

The Parliament of Georgia approved today the Amnesty Bill, proposed by the Georgian Dream, with the first reading with 82 votes pro.

One part of the opposition didn’t attend the sitting since they continued boycotting legislative activities. The opposition Girchi party members and MP Teona Akubardia asked questions to the bill’s initiator.

According to the project, amnesty will be extended to a number of crimes committed before July 1, 2024.

In particular, persons convicted of the crimes provided for in Article 66 of the Criminal Code will be fully exempted from punishment or the punishment will be reduced by 1/2 or 1/4.

In addition, the reduction of the sentence by 1/6 will apply to Article 225 of the Criminal Code.

The amnesty will not apply to: - persons convicted of murder, drug dealers, sexual crimes, robbery, terrorism, corruption and official crimes, underworld, conventional crimes, trafficking and other serious and especially serious crimes.

Besides, approximately 7,000 people will have their conditional sentences reduced by one year.
