Georgian Parliament Speaker said the statement as if there was an intention to “ban all opposition parties” was simply “disinformation”.
“Assessing the intention to initiate a legal process against the United National Movement by some representatives of the European Union as an undemocratic step, contradicts the principles of both legal state and democracy. And the statement as if there is an intention to “ban all opposition parties” is simply disinformation.
Unfortunately, over the years, we have witnessed this indifferent attitude, when Mikheil Saakashvili, convicted in serious crimes, moved around the EU territory without any problem and, what is even more striking, held meetings in various EU institutions. Even after his arrest, attempts never end, including by some EU representatives, to free Saakashvili from legal punishment under various pretexts. The same applies to Zurab Adeishvili, convicted in torturing prisoners, who meets with various high-ranking EU officials, and the convict Davit Kezerashvili, who until now finds shelter in the EU.
Respect for the Georgian people, first of all, means respect for the legal proceedings in Georgia, the highest standard of which has been repeatedly confirmed by the European Court of Human Rights.
And finally, making such statements considering the fact that the EU member states themselves use different instruments towards their political parties, is not a right behaviour. Let me remind you that in Germany, based on the court"s decision, the second most supported party “Alternative for Germany” has been the object of surveillance by the German security service for years.
For those who need to be reminded of a criminal regime the UNM has established, once again, below is a list of cases on which these high-ranking officials have already been convicted in courts. Let us also not forget that due to the amnesty these are halved sentences.
President Mikheil Saakashvili (three more cases are still under judicial consideration):
1. Girgvliani’s murder case - 4 years
2. The case of beating an MP Gelashvili - 6 years
Prosecutor General Zurab Adeishvili (two more cases are still under judicial consideration):
1. The case of wine factory “Akura” -1,5 years
2. TV Iberia case - 1,5 years
3. The case of kidnapping and beating Koba Davitashvili - 6 years
4. The case of torturing of prisoners - 4,5 years
5. Bank Cartu’s bankruptcy case - 5 years
Minister of Defense David Kezerashvili:
1.The case of embezzlement of 5 million euros - 6 years”, - writes Shalva Papuashvili on the X social network.
His comment followed after Peter Stano, the EU’s foreign affairs spokesperson, on Tuesday said that Brussels was “concerned” by the proposed “ban of all opposition parties” put forward by the Georgian Dream Government.
