Parliament has passed a decree today officially scheduling the presidential elections.
This year marks a historic first, as the President of Georgia will be elected under a newly implemented system.
The president will be elected for a five-year term by an electoral college composed of 300 members, including all members of 150 members of Parliament of Georgia, 20 members from highest representative bodies of autonomous republics of Abkhazia, and 21 members from Adjara.
The remaining 109 members of the electoral college will be nominated by relevant political parties from local self-government representative bodies, in accordance with quotas set by the CEC of Georgia based on the organic law.
The presidential election will commence at 9:00 AM on December 14 in the Georgian Parliament building. A minimum of 30 members of the electoral college are required to nominate a candidate for the presidency of Georgia.
In the 1st round of voting, a candidate must secure at least two-thirds of the votes from the full composition of the electoral college to be elected. If no candidate achieves this threshold, a 2nd round will take place on the same day, with the presidency awarded to the candidate who receives the majority of votes.
