A newly constructed two-lane tunnel connecting University Street and Petre Kavtaradze Street via Mikheil Shavishvili Street has officially opened to traffic in Tbilisi’s Vake district.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.
"A few months ago, we inaugurated the Bagebi overpass, which significantly improved traffic in that area. This new project serves the same purpose - to make movement across the city as comfortable as possible. Moreover, such initiatives contribute to the development of surrounding urban spaces. First and foremost, I would like to thank Kakha Kaladze. I am confident that our city will continue to develop even further. Mayor has ambitious plans for the next four years. A comprehensive and refined development plan is being prepared for Tbilisi, and I am certain that four years from now, we will see even greater progress and many more projects like this one. If we compare today`s Tbilisi with what it was eight years ago, the difference is striking - it is now significantly more developed, greener and more beautiful. And this is primarily due to the efforts of the Mayor", - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
"This project is as another significant infrastructure achievement for Tbilisi. I am confident our capital will become even more organised, greener, and more beautiful. While many successful projects are behind us, we are undeterred by the challenges that remain", - added Kakha Kaladze.
The project includes modern LED lighting, new sidewalks, and upgraded communication and drainage systems. The tunnel construction and rehabilitation of Shavishvili Street were funded with GEL 15 million from the city budget. The development is expected to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, and reduce travel time in the area.
