No one expects Brussels to change… However, against the backdrop of ongoing world events, Georgia will always remain a living exposure of Brussels’ hypocrisy and double standards - Papuashvili

No one expects today’s Brussels to change its behaviour anymore, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament writes on his Facebook page.

As he noted, for 7 years Brussels has watched not only violence but attempts to overthrow the government, and has not once condemned the violence.

“‘We condemn the violence in Tirana and other Albanian cities, including the setting fire to buildings, attacks on state institutions and destruction of public and private property.’

That was the European Commission’s 18 October statement on the events in Albania. We expected exactly the same statement from the EU, on:

---June 20, 2019, when, according to Papuashvili, the United National Movement party attempted to storm Parliament and overthrow the government.
---November 2020, when he said the opposition, having lost the elections, attempted to storm the Central Election Commission, disrupt the electoral process, and overthrow the Government.
---March 2021, when, according to Papuashvili, members of the opposition movement barricaded themselves inside their party headquarters alongside wanted opposition figure Nika Melia and threatened to overthrow the Government.
---June 2022, when he alleged that NGOs controlled from abroad, together with the United National Movement party attempted to overthrow the Government.
---April 2023, when, he claimed, protesters attempting to overthrow the Government tried to burn a person alive with a Molotov cocktail, an incident he described as unprecedented in Georgia’s history.
---October 2024, when, according to Papuashvili, the opposition and NGOs controlled from abroad attempted to storm Parliament and overthrow the Government after losing the elections.
---October 2025, when he said the opposition and foreign-backed NGOs attempted to disrupt the local elections, storm the presidential palace, and overthrow the Government.

For 7 years Brussels has watched not only violence but attempts to overthrow the government, and not once (I stress, not once) has it condemned that violence. On the contrary, after every failed attempt at violence and at toppling the government, Brussels attacked Georgia, thereby covering up the responsibility of the violent groups. As one well-known old card put it, ‘It’s all clear.’ It has all been clear for a long time.

No one expects today’s Brussels to change its behaviour. But against the backdrop of events around the world, Georgia will always remain living proof of Brussels’ hypocrisy and double standards.

This time, let us recall what President Macron said when Georgian police officers were being attacked, and people were trying to topple Georgia, and what he says now that French police officers are being attacked and people are trying to topple France”, - writes Shalva Papuashvili.
