Several European countries became victims of large-scale manipulation of information during electoral processes. Among them is Georgia, it is enough to make the public believe that the elections were rigged - French Interior Minister

France is tightening its legislation against foreign interference. The Minister of the Interior of France, Laurent Nuñez, noted during his speech at the plenary session of the Senate: "The security of the country does not extend only to its borders or streets. It is also determined in the digital space".

According to the Minister, over recent months, several European countries, including Georgia, became victims of large-scale information manipulation during electoral processes.

As he further explained, ten years ago, France did not possess a single operational capability to fight against information manipulation and foreign digital interference.

"Democratic debate has shifted to the internet, particularly to digital platforms and social networks; certain actions could cause serious damage to our institutions and democratic life. This especially applies to the dissemination of manifestly false or misleading information. Such information can gain a wide foothold on the internet and have a devastating impact on society. These are neither just words nor prophecies. Over recent months, several European countries became victims of large-scale manipulation of information during electoral processes. Among them are Georgia, Moldova, Germany, and the United Kingdom. It is enough to make the public believe that the elections were rigged. At this time, doubt becomes a political weapon, while the first victim is the citizens` trust in their own institutions. Ten years ago, France did not possess a single operational capability to fight against information manipulation and foreign digital interference", - said Laurent Nuñez.
