The situation in Georgia in relation to freedom of religion has been included in the 2016 report of the US State Department.
The document was introduced to the public by the head of the department, Rex Tylerson.
The document submitted by Rex Tylerson states that the Constitution of Georgia provides full freedom of religion, but in comparison to other religious groups, the Georgian Orthodox Church is in a privileged position.
The Executive Director of Media Development Fund Tamar Kintsurashvili notes that the facts provided in the document underline the unequal and inaccurate approach of the country in relation to religious confessions that are reflected on their funding by the state.
Member of the Board of Directors of the Tolerance and Diversity Institute, Mako Ghavtadze notes that there are facts on which the investigation has not started or is still going on.
Tamta Mikeladze, director of the Civic-Political Rights Program of Human Rights Education and Monitoring Center, speaks about the loyalty towards the Orthodox Church of the authorities. Mikeladze emphasizes that the rights of other religious groups are violated by such attitudes.
