After 7-month pause the Synod session will be held today. The crisis in the Patriarchate and the stripping of Archbishop Shio of legitimacy are the main issues that 46 bishops will discuss. After the Catholicos-Patriarch nominated locum tenans, the high hierarchy clergy gather for the first time. It is not ruled out that the majority will not support this decision and Shio will remain without the high status granted by the Patriarch.
Priests will not be able to avoid the issue of Archpriest Giorgi Mamaladze as well. Besides the internal topics, the Georgian Patriarchate also has to take decision in the foreign direction. The question of autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine is on agenda now.
