The situation in the Pankisi Gorge is calm for the moment. After meeting with the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Elders of the Gorge, it was stated that construction of HPP will be temporarily suspended.
According to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the population of Pankisi Gorge will make a decision,and negotiate with the company, which has to build the HPP, will continue until the final decision.
Despite the statement of the Minister of Internal Affairs, the population still remains in the meeting place. So far no special forces and various units of the Ministry of Internal Affairshave been removed from the gorge.
Civil activist Sulkhan Bodzikashvili, who attended the meeting of the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Elders, said that the population"s biggest resistance is to the construction of Birkani HPP. According to him, the lack of a dialogue between the representatives of the construction company and the locals caused the developments today.
