Despite the emphasis on the role of the interior minister in dispersing the confrontation, the Pankisi people say that it does not free Gakharia from the responsibility of bringing the Special Forces into the gorge. The position of locals remains unchanged in connection with the HPPs.
"We do not justify the actions of the state, introduction of the riot police but we are also self-critical and underscore that the use of violent methods on the part of the population was a big mistake," said Ramzan Margoshvili, a resident of Pankisi Gorge.
