"Severe humanitarian situation can endanger peace" - President speaks at GDSC about occupied territories

Salome Zourabichvili in her welcoming speech at the Georgian Defense and Security Conference spoke about Georgia"s role in the security of the region. According to the President, the fact that many important events were held in Batumi indicates that Georgia is one of the important places for partner countries.

"It already means that this place, the Black Sea, Georgia, is one of the important places for our partners, for the safety of our region and not just for the safety of our region.
Security challenges for Georgia and not only for Georgia are growing in today"s world.
Georgia is not far from the crisis hotspots, the crisis arch and the wider region where war, terrorism, domestic political turbulence, the issue of migrants, and so on threaten security, development and peace.
Georgia, however, remains an island of stability and succeeded in preventing it from having a negative impact on its economic and democratic development.
Threats are taking new forms, and as in many countries the issue of cyber security is present here", - said Zourabichvili, citing a large-scale cyberattack, which was recently carried out on tens of thousands of domains, including on the official website of the Georgian president.
According to the President of Georgia, the situation in the occupied by Russia territories is a big challenge.
“But the humanitarian distress of the populations living on both sides of this line could at any time challenge the peace and the peaceful development.
Only during the last week, two humanitarian tragedies unfolded : one woman – Margo Matiashvili - died for not having been allowed to use the crossing point and get treatment, another woman Tamar Gigauri is fighting for her life since she was forcefully transferred to Tskhinvali hospital, and not given the chance to get the medical treatment available only on our side of the occupation line. I want to use this forum, and appeal through you to the international community, to the cochairs of the GID to adress urgently this humanitarian tragedy and look for effective solutions”, - noted Zourabichvili.
